About:

I am a Professor of Computer Science, leader of the Intelligent Environments Group and a director of the interdisciplinary Digital Lifestyles Centre at Essex University in the UK. I established and directed mobile robotics research at Essex before founding a centre for intelligent environment research. Both areas now boast world-class teams and facilities such as the iSpace (a full size digital home), the iCampus (a Living Lab based on an instrumented campus) and iWorld (on online simulation of the Essex intelligent environments). I hold a B.Eng and PhD in Electronics and Computing, respectively, from Sheffield University. In general terms, my main expertise concerns technology for the creation of intelligent environments, which are everyday settings such as homes, offices, hotels, restaurants, shops, hospitals, classrooms, stage/studios, manufacturing environments, cars, trains, aircraft, boats, cities, public spaces and electronic clothing/fashion that are equipped with advanced networked computer based systems, which enable better or new lifestyles for people. More specifically, my recent work has been directed at developing the immersive Internet, affective intelligent agents, quantum robotic controllers, end-user programming, and methods for ensuring stability of pervasive computing systems. I have authored over 100 papers in international journals, conferences and books (the more recent ones being listed below) and I hold 4 key patents in his field. I have been principal investigator on numerous research projects attracting over 2 million pounds in funding and involving ongoing collaborations with researchers in many countries such as Germany, France, Greece, USA, China and Taiwan. I am a founder and principal organiser of the international annual IEEE sponsored conference, Intelligent Environments (being program chair for the first 7 years & now workshops chair), current program chair of Active Media Technology 2011, past program chair Pervasive Computing & Applications, Ubiquitous Intelligence & Computing conferences, founder member of the Creative Science Foundation (and associated workshops) and a member of the editorial teams of the Intelligent Buildings International, Pervasive Computing & Communications, Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments journals.
