The visit of Her Majesty The
Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh to the University of Essex
To mark the
University's 40th anniversary, in November
2004, Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh
visited the University of Essex. The celebrations included a number of
demonstrations of University research to Her Majesty The
Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. One of
the demonstrations was provided by the Intelligent Environments Group (IEG) who gave two demonstrations, the first on the use of
intelligent agents to assist occupants manage their smart homes, the
second an ÒInternet of ThingsÓ peripheral for mobile phones.
In the following pictures the Duke of Edinburgh
being briefed by Professor Victor Callaghan about intelligent agents for
autonomous management of smart homes. In these pictures is Dr Fayaiz Doctor who, at the time was completing a PhD on the
topic.



In the following pictures Her Majesty The Queen
being briefed by Professor Victor Callaghan about the ÒInternet of ThingsÓ using,
as a demonstration, a mobile phone based internet
appliance for plant care. In these pictures are Dr Jeannette Chin (conducting a
PhD in this area) and Professor Sir Ivor
Crewe (the then VC of Essex University).
